The largest collection of Venetian art in
existence, the Gallerie dell’Accademia is
housed in three former reli gious buildings.
The basis of the collection was the
Accademia di Belle Arti, founded in 1750
by the painter Giambattista Piazzetta. In 1807
Napoleon moved the academy to these
premises and the collection was greatly
enlarged by works of art from the churches
and monasteries that he suppressed.

his witty, gently satirical
