ABOVE RIGHT A fallen beech tree lies on
snowy ground in winter. Dead wood is not
cleared in the primeval forests of Abruzzo. By
leaving it on the floor to decay, the woodland
recycles the nutrients amassed in the trees.
RIGHT A pine marten pauses for a moment
while patrolling its territory. These elusive
members of the weasel family eat birds and
small mammals. The skilled hunters can leap
from tree to tree in pursuit of squirrels.
