ABOVE On a spring day,
a vole collects leaves
to build a nest. This
small rodent is the most
abundant mammal in
the beech forest and
a source of food for
many predators.
RIGHT A female tawny
owl snoozes in a beech
tree. The nocturnal
bird of prey mainly
feeds on small rodents.
Its population tends
to increase after the
bumper beechmast
year because its prey
thrive on the fruits
of the forest.
