ABOVE On a spring day,
                                                                                                  a vole collects leaves
                                                                                                  to build a nest. This
                                                                                                  small rodent is the most
                                                                                                  abundant mammal in
                                                                                                  the beech forest and
                                                                                                  a source of food for
                                                                                                  many predators.










         RIGHT A female tawny
         owl snoozes in a beech
         tree. The nocturnal
         bird of prey mainly
         feeds on small rodents.
         Its population tends
         to increase after the
         bumper beechmast
         year because its prey
         thrive on the fruits
         of the forest.
