STORY
Winter is a very long
season in the Apennines
and a thick layer of
snow often covers the
forests, drastically
changing the lives of
its inhabitants. Under
these conditions,
animals such as this
red fox have to roam
extensively to find food.
ABOVE Beech trees create
ideal habitats for hole-nesting
species such as the Lilford’s
or white-backed woodpecker.
The abundance of dead wood
in Abruzzo attracts larvae,
which the birds feed on.
BRUNO D’AMICIS
is an Italian wildlife
photographer. Using
his camera, camera-traps
and drones, he documented
the beech forests of Abruzzo
National Park between 2014
and 2017. “This wildlife-rich
area is a world lost in time,” he
says. His work has resulted in a
hardback book. Find out more
