STORY
ABOVE Beech woods are the most
typical forest type of Abruzzo, making up
approximately 84 per cent of the area. The
tree species has a large crown, greyish bark
and oval-shaped leaves. Male flowers occur
in drooping clusters while female flowers
grow in pairs surrounded by a small cup.
RIGHT A rare Apennine brown bear
(subspecies of brown bear) peers through
the trees. Approximately 50 individuals live
in the forests of Abruzzo. The unmanaged
woodland enables the omnivores to find
safe cover and reliable food sources.
