Porcupine
A
spiky bush on legs! That’s what a
porcupine looks like. You don’t want
to mess with one because it has a secret
weapon. Its back is covered in special stiff
hairs, called quills, which are very sharp. If
a porcupine is scared, it raises its quills and
charges backward. Any attacker is left with
a face full of spines. Ouch!
Porcupines have tiny eyes and can’t see very
well. Instead they sniff their way around. At night
they leave their burrows to dig up roots and other
plant food. They are rodents, like rats and squirrels,
and like all rodents their teeth never stop growing.
Some porcupines collect bones to chew on and
wear their teeth down.
Porcupines rattle their quills
to warn off predators.
