Pheasant
M ale pheasants are some of the most dazzling birds in the
world. Many are brightly colored and have long tail plumes.
Golden pheasants live in dark, shady forests. If males spend too long
in the sun, their feathers can lose some of their color. The female
looks less eye-catching than the male, but her speckled brown
feathers are the perfect disguise in dappled forest light. They hide
her and her eggs from predators.
To attract a partner, a male golden pheasant puts on a special
display. He dashes in front of a female and spreads his golden neck
feathers to make a cape that covers his beak, leaving just enough
room for him to peek over the top.
The golden pheasant lives in China, where
it is a sign of beauty and good luck.
