Lemur
L emurs live on the tropical island of
Madagascar, off the east coast of
Africa. Some are like tiny mice, but others
look more like monkeys. Many of them
can leap from tree to tree using their
long arms and tails for balance. Ring-
tailed lemurs are unusual—they often
scamper across the ground of their dry
forest home, their striped tails held high.
Being in a crowd suits ring-tailed lemurs. Up to
thirty family members live together with a top female
in charge. The gang go looking for juicy fruit, flowers,
and leaves to eat, and they can’t resist sap, a sweet
liquid from trees. At night, the family snuggles up to sleep
in a tree or cave.
