Jedburgh a moon in the Calufrax system. They had captured and tortured many of his men,
sending back their headless corpses by catapult. After the battle was over he and what was
left of the contingent were treated for post-traumatic stress disorder. Seeing this head must
have brought it all back.
“I understand, you and I saw active service against them buggers” and he pointed at the
head. “So; your response is duly noted. Will you be bringing any guests to the service; I
might as well take details while I’m here”. He looked at Henrietta who was staring at the
head. She snapped out of the fascination and quickly drew up a list with the Mayor’s help.
That had worked a treat; he summoned a Forensic officer to collect the head and its
container. He spotted some paperwork on the Mayor’s desk it was invoices for the
Partnership in the Casino. The signatures caught his eye, Cordeaux, Mancine a cousin of the
Mayor, and one other, a spidery hand that read Silas Carnegie. He collected the list when
the Forensics guy arrived and made his departure. He fed his suspicions to the other
detectives and Dreck and Hurden went to the care home in Grindor Vistas to have a chat
with “Old Silas”.
The flight back to the Border Hyperspace Corridor was uneventful; however there
appeared to be some disturbance going on at the entrance to the Hyperspace Corridor.
Lomax asked the cabin crew what the problem was.
“A Buraxin freighter has developed a leak from one of its engine nacelles. The radiation is
destabilising the entrance to the corridor, they are trying to move it out of the way so other
traffic can pass, but using only impulse drive is making it laborious” The co-pilot said.
“Fine; just keep me and the other passengers updated. Have you the facility to connect
communications with the Force HQ on Kelgar from on board?” Lomax asked
“You can try from business class; I’ll get one of the stewards to take you to a private booth
sir. Now if you would please return, the Captain and I will have our hands full doing the
manoeuvring the Border patrol require us to do” the co-pilot continued and signalled one of
the stewardesses to assist Lomax with setting up his link. On the way to Business Class he
stopped off at his seat and picked up his portable pad telling Jenna and Jason what the
holdup was. He went with the stewardess and connected his communicator and pad to a
terminal in a private booth. Making sure he wouldn’t be disturbed he set about making the
link. He quickly caught up with events on Kelgar and when he heard about the paperwork
and Silas Carnegie’s signature said he’d look into it further when he arrived.
“Old Silas was always a practical joker, but even this is sick by his standards. He probably
knew of the Mayor’s service as he and the family were gunrunning between rival systems at
the time. But to send this sort of thing and get the dates wrong is out of character.” Krank
said toward the end of the transmission “And such an obvious fake too. Not his style” Krank
finished
“You would probably be better off talking with the Chief when the funeral’s over; he was a
lieutenant back then. And speaking of the funeral, I’ll need some quick alterations to my
dress uniform. You know where I keep it. The waist of the trousers will need taking in about
five centimetres, could you see to it. I’ve lost weight since I last wore it.” He ended the
conversation and closed down the link. His pad had Dreck’s notes on the case in full. He
