OBJECTIVES:
To learn the fundamentals of tissue engineering ,tissue characteristics and the measurement of cellular
components
To study the type of tissues and growth factors involved in tissue repairing and the wound healing
mechanism
To explore naturally available biomaterials and synthetic nano materials for developing potential
scaffolds to augment bone loss and other regenerative medicine
To get familiarize with the characteristics and the role of stem cells in tissue architecture
To acquire knowledge on clinical applications of tissue engineering and associated ethical issues
UNIT I INTRODUCTION 9
Introduction to tissue engineering: Basic definition; current scope of development; use in therapeutics, cells as
therapeutic agents, cell numbers and growth rates, measurement of cell characteristics morphology, number
viability, motility and functions. Measurement of tissue characteristics ,appearance, cellular component, ECM
component, mechanical measurements and physical properties.
UNIT II TISSUE ARCHITECTURE 9
Tissue types and Tissue components, Tissue repair, Engineering wound healing and sequence of events. Basic
wound healing Applications of growth factors: VEGF/angiogenesis, Basic properties, Cell-Matrix& Cell-Cell
Interactions, telomeres and Self-renewal, , Control of cell migration in tissue engineering.
UNIT III BIOMATERIALS 9
Biomaterials: Properties of biomaterials ,Surface, bulk, mechanical and biological properties. Scaffolds &
tissue engineering, Types of biomaterials, biological and synthetic materials, Biopolymers, Applications of
biomaterials, Modifications of Biomaterials, Role of Nanotechnology.
