t used to be the same every year since 1972. The long awaited day would finally
come. The day that sixth graders from each of many schools would leave for a
traditional three day stay at Camp Hitchcock. Their anxiety would reach its
highest peak when they loaded the bus. Then they said farewell to their homes
and families and away they went like inexperienced explorers going on their first
                                              journey.
Some were scared and afraid of being away from home. But after three full
days of activities the doubis disappeared, and the kids were sad that it was over.
The bus ride was a little quieter on the way home but it was filled with
giggles and laughter as friends exchanged stories. The next year, though, was
/ be different. The feeling will still be the same but the location and
                                       going to
activities will be different. The site will be a 4-H camp near Schram Park in
Gretna. The change was made because of the worry of Camp Hitchcock
being sold by the YMCA, its present owner. Changing, though might
have been a change for the better.
Dave Cain, administrator for Outdoor Education, described the new
camp. “It’s a smaller camp so the hikes won’t be as long. But there
are larger individual lodges and much newer facilities than Camp
Hitchcock. Also the park is by the river so we will be able to have ca
noeing as a new activity. We’re hoping this camp will be a suc
                                       cess.’’ by: Shellie Conley
