Swinging
season
hen tennis coach Garry Jurgens
Wwas making out his line-up for
the state playoffs, he had a little bit of
surprise. His boys’ team was moved up
to Class A division.
“We were moved up because of
another school dropping out,” said
Jurgens. “We were the next biggest
school in size so we were chosen to fill
in the position.”
The move didn’t affect the boys’
record, though. The team finished with
a 500 season of 5-5. In the Papio
Invite the boys had their best finish
with a fourth place. In the Fremont
Invite they finished eighth and in metro
and state they finished ninth and
fifteenth, respectively. Jurgens added
that the team would have finished
higher at state if they would have
remained in the Class B division.
Senior Mark Gelecki was chosen as
the outstanding player for the season.
One of the highlights of Mark’s season
was finishing second at the Papio
Invite.
“We had a good hustling team, but
we could never quite get everyone to
put it together on the same day,” said
Jurgens.
The girls’ team had a very successful
season, finishing first at the Papio
Invite, and ending its dual season with
an 8-2 record.
The number one doubles team of
Laura Burianek and Lori Selinger
finished third at both metro and state.
The number two doubles team of
Becky Burianek and Lisa Nelson also
finished third at both metro and state.
The number one singles position was
filled by junior Armina Rahman in the
invitationals, metro and state. The
number two singles position was filled
by freshman Kerrie Carlson.
Other members of the team included
senior Diane Whalen, sophomore
Nancy Carlson, and freshman Jodi
Estes.
“1 really felt we had a super
season,” said Jurgens. “We’ll have all
our girls back next year, except Diane,
and we should do just as good or
better.”
Ready at the net, junior Lori Selinger waits for a ball to come
her way. The #1 doubles team of Selinger/Burianek placed third
at the Omaha Metro Tournament
