winter season because of a lid bill
passed to help conserve energy.
The 1980-1981 gymnastics teams
were coached by Dave Contreras and
Mary Le Conway.
The boys’ team included freshmen
Mark Houlton and Chris Kohler,
sophomores Vic Berkland, Larry
Cohoon and Jon Duracinski, juniors
Brian Armstrong and Kurt Burkhalter
and senior Doug Lewis.
“We had our best year this season
with a 3-3 record,” said junior Kurt
Burkhalter. “We’ll have an even better
season next year.”
The girls’ team was made up of
three freshmen: Sue Christensen, Jenny
Sadler and Tricia Wiseman. The rest of
the team were sophomores Nancy
Carlson, Therese Conway, Karen
Coppersmith, Diane Hobza, Lenal
Kruse and Lisa Spinharney.
“We worked hard this year,” said
sophomore Therese Conway, “and it
payed off in the end with the whole
team going to state.”
“The boys’ team showed steady
improvement this year. I was very
pleased with the improvement of our
high bar team,” said coach Contreras.
He added that this was the first year
that Ralston qualified a full team to go
to state and that speaks for itself.
R alston “ cow boy” freshman Chris Kohler vaults the horse in
the warm-up session before the Ralston-Papio dual.
W aiting for the signal, sophomore Karen Coppersmith awaits to
begin her uneven bars routine at the Metro Gymnastics Conference
Meet held at Central High School. The team finished 14th and
qualified for the state meet.
