f you get beat, stick with it; don’t
I expect immediate success. This
was one of the wrestling team's goals
for the season.
“With the young team that we had,
our goals were very simple,’’ said
coach Jim McGrath. “Most of the
matches were close; with a little luck
they could have been 11-1.”
Seven people qualified for state; out
of these, five will return. Qualifiers
were Todd Dober, 98 lbs; Larry
Cohoon, 105 lbs; Vic Berkland, 112
lbs; Darin Ohnstad, 126 lbs; Rich
Waschinek, 132 lbs; Larry Kohler, 167
lbs; and Rich Pollock, 185 lbs.
Sophomores Darin Ohnstad and
Larry Cohoon placed fourth and sixth,
respectively, at the state meet.
Outstanding wrestlers were Vic
Berkland, Larry Cohoon, Todd Dober,
Steve Krieger, Darin Ohnstad, Rich
Waschinek and Larry Kohler. Larry
also was named most improved
wrestler.
The j.v. team finished the season
with a winning record of 9-3.
“Match by match, individually we
won two for every one we lost. With
seven sophomores on the varsity team,
we still held our own,” said coach Tom
Mruz.
Kevin Pote went undefeated with a
11-0 record; Dave Borders had a 10-2
record; Jon Duracinski, 9-3; Dave
Gerch, 9-2; Todd Graves, 7-1; and
Steve Hoeing finishing with a 6-4
record.
A tremendous amount of
improvement was shown on the
freshmen team. Sixteen boys went out
for the team and 13 finished the
season. The team’s record was 4-5.
“The record was not an indication of
the success of the season,” said coach
Eric Torring. “We were hampered by
giving up at least three weight classes
in each meet. Injuries to Kevin Shew
and John Chadwell were also factors
which hurt the team record.”
