Freshmen may think it’s rough coming into
Ralston High because they aren’t familiar with the
building, but they do have their friends. Just try
being a foreign exchange student. Catherine Giry of
France and Kanako Yamamoto of Japan were
Ralston’s foreign exchange students.
Giry came into Ralston as a senior, and was
hosted by the Gochanour family. Yamamoto, also a
senior, was hosted by the Cruise family. Giry’s host
sister, Freshman Cissy Gochanour, said she and her
mother wanted to host a foreign exchange student.
“I thought it would be fun, interesting and a differ
ent experience,” Gochanour said. The Cruise family,
on the other hand, had hosted a foreign exchange
student two years before.
Experience is the end result for everyone. “Cath
erine was like a house guest at first, but now she is
part of the family,” Gochanour said. Cissy said she
had taken French before, so communication was
slow at first, but soon Catherine was “talking like an
American”. “Catherine is like a big sister; I can
confide in her.”
Talking like an American was one thing, but both
of these students were like any other American
teenager; they were involved with everything. Giry
was active in drama, German Club and swimming.
Yamamoto played on the tennis team and in the
band.
