The Dominican Republic is located between the Caribbean
Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, in the eastern part of the
Hispaniola Island. Its territorial extension is of 48,442 square
kilometers, with a tropical climate throughout the year and
a landscape of mountains, plains and a wide coastline of
beaches. The official language of the country is Spanish and
the currency is the Dominican Peso, with the advantage of
free currency convertibility, which allows transactions and
contracts in foreign currency. It is a democratic State with a
Government and elected officials under the parameters of a
modern Constitution adapted to the more developed libertarian
processes and respect for citizen’s rights. The freedom
of enterprise, access to goods and services and a clearly
established legal framework, respected by its authorities and
civilians, characterize this nation that has been registering for
the last 50 years a rate of economic growth in average above
5% annually. From the mid-1990s, The Dominican Republic
began a process of trade and international openness. This
country has Free Trade Agreements with the United States,
the European Union, the Caribbean community, Central
America and other nations. In addition, it has signed most
trade agreements and conventions of international reference,
including the World Trade Organization (WTO) and its laws are
adapted to the guidelines of international trade.
The legal framework in the Dominican Republic, focused
towards the facilitation of foreign investment, is complemented
by an adequate institutional structure, notably the Center
of Export and Investment (CEI-RD), as well as the National
Free Zones Council (CNZFE), the National Competitiveness
Council (CNC) & Proindustria. These institutions are backed by
ministries such as Industry and Trade, Environment and Natural
Resources, Energy and Mines, Foreign Affairs, among others.

Prestigious international organizations, such as “The Global
Competitiveness Report 2013-2014” of the World Economic
Forum, placed the country in a privileged position in terms of

The Center of Export and Investment (CEI-RD) currently
develops a proactive plan for promoting investment in the
country, increasing its participation in local and internatio-
nal events, such as business forums, exhibits, reception of
delegations of foreign investors and other activities, with
the goal of keeping the Dominican Republic’s positioning
as the number one investment destination in the region.To
accomplish this goal, the Government relies on the motiva-
tion, compromise and learning abilities of Dominicans, as
well as the use of innovative technology; the highest envi-
ronmental standards, the strengthening of both technical
and professional education, in response to the demand of
industries and investors in the country.
