En el mes de marzo del 2014, la
República Dominicana obtuvo el
reconocimiento “Infraestructura
360” por parte del Banco Inte-
ramericano de Desarrollo (BID)
por el proyecto Parque Eólico Los
Cocos, como modelo de inversio-
nes sostenibles y liderazgo en ma-
teria de medio ambiente.

Energy production is one of the most profitable
businesses in Dominican Republic, combined with
the legal facilities for the development of diverse
projects of renewable production.
Dominican Republic has successfully received projects of green
investment, from wind and solar power, biomass, and hydroelec-
trics which have had a high impact in the national economy.
With the approval of the Law 57-07 on Development of Renewa-
ble Sources of Energy, Dominican Republic has set the basis to
reach, in short time, the self-sufficiency on the subject of energy
generation,without causing serious damages to the environment.
This legislation contemplates incentives and fiscal exemptions
both for producers and for auto-generators of alternative energy,
which has allowed the Dominican Republic to turn into one of the
main producers of this type of energy of the whole region.
Enrique Ramirez, executive director of the National Commis-
sion of Energy (CNE), emphasizes the main investments in the
renewable energy field.
How has the D.R. advanced in the renewable energy
sector?
The renewable energy currently has a significant impact due
to its low prices. Because of the technological progress and
the European crisis, a renewable project that used to have a
10 year return of investment ,now offers a ROI of 3 to 4 years.
We need a cheap energy base, and this is what president Da-
nilo Medina has proposed with the hiring of international cre-
dits for the construction of two new plants of mineral coal.Next
year is expected the entry of 180 megawatts in solar energy
and in the 3 to 4 following years, the non traditional renewable
energy might be a 1.5 % to 2 % of the entire generation.
What are the new energy projects under development?
Vicini is investing in a new 30-megawatt biomass plant. It will be
one of the region’s largest plants of its kind. It will produce energy
from cane bagasse,but also with natural gas and coal.In the Cor-
poration of free trade zones of Santiago also began the installation
of a biomass plant of 3 megawatts that will produce with residues
and wood of around 100 km radius of the area of Santiago.We
have 12 megawatts of solar power installed with a monthly avera-
ge of 500 kilos that are been integrated into the system,especially
solar energy. The Dominican system proposes alternatives and
solutions that allow us to have an impact on energy prices.
Are there other projects in Scope?
The Larimar project, which is a 50-megawatt wind farm pro-
ject,is the third stage of Los Cocos,Pedernales,which will add
135 megawatts in the southern area of the country.There are
two wind projects, which are seeking financing, for about 80
megawatts between South and North.We are also in the pha-
se of construction of 30 megawatts of solar power in Monte
Plata. We have in scope the possibility to install around 100
mini hydro, through the REUS and the CDEEE.
Can Energy exhibit good results?
With its renewable energy policy ,the country has achieved
positive results, because the sectors that act in the process
of recognition of the investment and work incentives ; the
Government has given large support to the National Com-
mission of Energy, to the Treasury Department, Customs and
DGII, that together with the energy sector, have given the
message that things work and ,that allows the investments
to flow.This is due to the high confidence level.Today, Domi-
nican Republic, on the subject of renewable energy, is a top
country that enjoys the confidence for investment.
