The Wendigo
By Kenzie
Wendigo. A name of a rumored creature that resides in the depths of the forest.
Eating anyone unlucky enough to come across it. It was said that it has a deer skull for it’s
head, and a cloak covering it’s whole body with a black cloak. With teeths as sharp as
daggers, and claws harder than diamond. Based on its appearance, it looks like it was
made to disassemble your body and eat you, at least that’s what I thought.
My name is Simon, 16 years old, brown haired and sadly…..5 foot 2. Somehow my
growth spurt hasn’t kicked in yet. I live with my parents and my little brother, he’s 12. Today,
my parents are taking us out on a camping trip in the famous Elfin forest. Apparently
someone has spotted a wendigo once. Of course nobody believed them, my parents
included. But if a wendigo does live there, I would run as far away as possible.
I was just checking my luggage to see if I had missed anything when my parents
sent my little brother to get me. We got to the car and we drove to the forest. After 30
minutes, we finally arrived at the Elfin Forest. We quickly set up camp at an open spot
and grabbed our luggages to unpack. After a while I decided to try to explore the area a
bit. After 15 minutes of exploring, I decided to head back, but the thing is, I have zero clue
on where I am. I kept on wandering for a bit, until I heard a loud scream.
I was curious to where the scream came from, so I cautiously walked to where the
sound came from. What I saw made me freeze, it was a wendigo. It was huge, towering at
approximately 6 foot 7, with it’s deer skull head and cloak. It was leaning on a boulder as if it
was scared of something in front of it. When I saw what was in front of it, it made me
question reality……A cockroach. A 6 foot 7 monster with one of the most intimidating looks
I’ve ever
seen…..is afraid of a small 10 cm cockroach.
I was unsure of the decision I’m gonna make, but I walked and killed the cockroach
and looked at the wendigo in more detail. It’s skull is hollow, there’s no brain or nerves or
anything. When it’s eye socket met my eyes, it almost looked scared of me. I carefully
signed that I came in peace. It’s head tilted to the right, as if motioning confusion. Why did I
think that signing it would work in the first place?
It then ignored my existence and just walked away to an open area in the forest. I slowly
followed it to see where it’s going and to my surprise……it was farming? It was spitting water to
some crops which was pretty gross, but that confirms that it doesn’t eat people at all.
I then recognized this area as the pathway that was near my family’s camp. I then
left the wendigo to do it’s thing and followed the pathway, leading back to camp. This
experience has certainly left quite a memorable moment in my head. Maybe other myths
are true? Maybe they are also misunderstood like the wendigo?
