Don’t Leave Me Behind
By Kendra
Beep, beep! She needs a shot of epileptic stat. Watching through the sidelines, Emily watched
her mother trying to help a patient who was having severe seizures. Emily was an 18-year-old
girl working at the Health Life Care hospital. Her mother, Dr Stacy Green, is a doctor at the
hospital.
Emily has been working at the hospital since she was 15 years old. She helps take care of
children, deliver food and clean the hospital.
One day as she was walking to the storage room to put away some hospital equipment, she
bumped into a boy named Nate. ”You got a hard head”, Nate said. “Yeah, no need to
apologize “Emily replied as she rolled her eyes. As she bent down to help pick up the
equipment, Nate had also bent down to help. “Hi I’m Nate, what’s your name?” Nate asked
as they both stood up. Emily, she replied. She questioned what a cute boy was doing at the
hospital. He casually replied saying he liked hanging around here but he was actually in a
hurry to go somewhere and hoped to see her again soon. He waved goodbye then left.
The next day, as Emily walked into the hospital, she noticed Nate sitting in the treatment
room for cancer. She was shocked that he was there but didn’t want to say anything and
knew he had his reasons for not telling her. She instead continued with her long day ahead.
Later that day Nate came to see her. She couldn’t stop thinking about what she saw this
morning. As Nate started talking, she accidentally blurted out,”I know you have cancer?”.
Nate seemed stunned with what she said and shouted…”I cannot believe you're stalking
me!” You're not my doctor so leave me alone.
Emily was so hurt that she sprinted towards the hospital exit. The next day, every chance she
got, she tried to avoid Nate but although she was hurt, she couldn’t stop thinking about him. After
work, she was sitting on the bench waiting for her mom to finish off work when she noticed Nate
walking over to her. There was no way for her to escape so she forced a fake smile on her face
and greeted Nate.Nate stared into Emily’s eyes and said“Listen Emily, the reason why I didn’t tell
you I had cancer is because I didn’t want you to look at me as the sick boy.” Emily replied “I
would never look at you differently, I am really sorry for what happened earlier and I hope
you can forgive me.”. ”Thank you Emily”,Nate said as he sat beside her. Time flew by as they
talked and Dr Stacy’s shift was over but before Emily left, they exchanged phone numbers.
It had been about 2 days since the incident had happened and Emily and Nate were clicking
so well. They were constantly talking and getting to know each other. One day, Emily wanted
to show her appreciation towards Nate by bringing him some chocolates.
