Responsibilities After Thoracentesis

• Complete the patient's condition - tidy up the unit, reinstall the fan and tidy up the
equipment.

• Perform continuous observation to detect complications and report to the doctor if

necessary for at least 6-8 hours - general condition, respiratory pattern, cough pattern

(haemoptysis), pulse and blood pressure as well as patient complaints.

• Encourage the patient to do breathing exercises so that they can inflate and deflate as
usual under normal circumstances.

• Assist the patient for daily activities for 4 - 6 hours early post thoracentesis.
