Responsibilities Before Thoracentesis

• Instruct the patient to hold their breath or not to cough or not to move while the needle
is inserted to avoid puncturing the lung tissue.

• Position the patient according to the patient’s condition (refer to patient position notes

for thoracentesis).

• Equipment supply.

➢Prepare the equipment completely so that the work goes smoothly.

➢Open the chest aspiration set when the doctor is properly prepared by maintaining
sterility.

➢Add equipment if necessary.
