Responsibilities Before Thoracentesis
• Explain or tell the patient the purpose and importance of thoracentesis done so that the
patient understands and can cooperate.
• Teach the patient deep breathing exercise and hold the breath while the needle is inserted
to avoid being punctured into the lungs which can cause injury / trauma.
• Determine the consent form has been signed by the patient where the patient agrees to
the procedure being performed as a legal medico.
• Perform vital sign observations and prioritize respiratory patterns as the basis of
comparison to detect complications.
