A passagem destes 150 anos não poderia deixar de ser assinalada pela Assembleia da
República, e, por isso, nos associámos desde a primeira hora a esta evocação e somos com
orgulho uma das instituições liderantes destas comemorações.
Desde logo porque cabe à Assembleia da República vigiar pelo cumprimento da Consti-
tuição da República Portuguesa, em coerência com a própria Carta Internacional dos Direitos
Humanos.
Mas também porque sei, porque sabemos, pelos exemplos que infelizmente nos conti-
nuam a chegar de todo o mundo, que a causa dos direitos humanos nunca está eternamente
adquirida e que deve, portanto, ser recordada e defendida todos os dias.

The passing of these 150 years cannot be left unnoticed by the Assembly of the Republic
and we have therefore joined this tribute from the very beginning and are proud to be one of
the institutions leading the commemorations.
First and foremost because it is the Assembly of the Republic’s responsibility to oversee
compliance with the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, in accordance with the Interna-
tional Charter of Human Rights.
But also because I know – because we know – from the examples that sadly continue to
be seen around the world, that the cause of human rights will never be acquired eternally and
must therefore be remembered and defended every day.
