Connecting Learners with Community
Using Class 8 Statistics for sensitising children on social issues-
19-20 October 2019
Two day workshop was conducted as part
of Foundation’s school outreach programme
“Connecting Learners with Community” at
MRMKMMHSS, Edava for class 8 students
on 19-20, October 2019. The objective of
the workshop was to make the learners
understand that the classroom content
is very much related to everyday life as
well as, to develop skills in recognising
and solving social issues. Activity oriented
learning strategies were adopted to help all
the children regardless of learning levels to
come out of their mental block regarding
the difficulty level of learning mathematics.
Children defined statistics, appreciated the
use and applications of statistics, collected
primary data, classified the data, grouped
the data, prepared frequency tables and
draw histograms. The learners understood
the solid issues and suggested solutions
through the insights of games and activities
used in the class. They collected data from
their own class regarding age, education of
mother and father, occupation of mother and
father, number of members in the family etc.
so that the women can spent their time
for productive activities and leisure too.
The students discussed the advantages
and disadvantages of nuclear family and
joint family after analysing the frequency
table prepared based on the number of
members in their families. Children also
discussed the importance of data collection
and classification in the light of a textbook
exercise on blood sample collection and
classification.
