Renaissance Lecture on ‘Emerging Developments
in Education sector of Kerala’
The importance and antiquity of education in
Kerala is underscored by the state’s ranking as
among the most literate in the country. In view
of the significance of the emerging context, it
is necessary to have an analysis of prospects
and challenges to be addressed in educational
scenario of Kerala. As part of the 10th
Renaissance Lecture Prof. (Dr). P. M. Rajan
Gurukkal Vice Chairman, Kerala State Higher
Education Council delivered a talk on “Emerging
Developments in Education sector of Kerala”
on April 12, 2019 at Lajanathul Mohammediya
Auditorium, Alappuzha. He explained about the
current educational scenario in Kerala and of
the histories of education during the period of
Vakkom Moulavi as well.
He suggested that certain changes have to
be made presently in Kerala. The teachers,
parents and society have to promote the
questioning skills of children. The new trend is
to stop preventing children from the attitudes
of questioning about the aspects they observe,
they feel, and they think, which is inappropriate

for developing the innovativeness and creativity
among the future generation. Enhancing the
concept of anxiety in children to find reason
and solutions through education needs to
be spread as a teaching learning method.
Presenting new subjects by the teacher with
the participation of children and providing
opportunity for children to express their opinion
on the subject rather than presenting what is
being taught is important. He pointed out that
one of the reasons for the failure of education
is lack of good teachers. He also discussed
about the problems of higher education in
Kerala and the steps currently taken by the
Kerala State Higher Education Council to
improve this. He emphasised that efforts have
started in documentation of the programme
outcomes and course learning outcomes in
all universities in Kerala. He also put forward
the need to develop the inter-disciplinary
knowledge among teachers that helps to
increase the quality of students. He also
