ABF The Soldiers’ Charity
The National Charity of the British Army. Here for soldiers, veterans, and their immediate families,
for life.
What they do:
The overall scale, breadth and range of their support is vast. They help very young serving
families cope with a sudden bereavement or traumatic loss. They provide wide-ranging support to
wounded soldiers, many of whom will need increasing financial assistance for decades to come.
They provide help with housing, education and training for employment for soldiers and veterans
of all ages. They are there for older veterans and their widows or widowers when they find them-
selves lonely or isolated.
They fund numerous charities and organisations to support the Army family at large. They pride
ourselves on acting immediately when help is needed, providing true through-life support for the
nation’s soldiers, veterans and families. Crucially, They act with speed. When they are alerted
that a person or family is in need of help, They aim to make the relevant grant within 48
hours.
How to apply for help
In order to provide support they require each request to be accompanied by a written confidential
report from one of their partner organisations, normally SSAFA or The Royal British Legion,
which provides the Charity with the proof of service, background to the case, financial position of
the client/s and the “need” which requires funding. Any applications for assistance with specialist
equipment or home adaptations will need to be supported, as a minimum, by an Occupational
Therapists report, alongside a clinical recommendation as appropriate.
Having made contact with a supporting agency (highlighted above) the process below will be

Having made contact with a supporting agency (SSAFA or The Royal British Legion) the
process below will be followed:
Step 1: The agents will normally arrange for a meeting to take place to allow them to understand
the circumstances behind your request for support. This is a confidential discussion and you
agree with them the approach to asking for financial or other support.
Step 2: If you decide you wish to proceed and request help, a written report is prepared by trained
staff.
Step 3: The report, when completed, will be forwarded to your Regimental or Corps Association
for consideration. If they are unable to meet the request in full they will approach ABF The
Soldiers’ Charity for assistance on your behalf.
Step 4: If assistance is approved it will be paid to their agent on your behalf or direct to a
contractor/business. They do NOT make payments or give cash directly to individuals.
