IDEOLOGICAL
CONFLICTS AND
APPROACHES
BETWEEN THE OLD
AND THE YOUNG
Reformation Movement (the Islah)
Right cliques believe in cooperation with The Old vs The Young
the colonialists as the safe way for the
Malay rulers and chiefs
Left cliques believe that maintaining the The Malay left began with
well-being of the masses is the more the Islah (reform)
consummate and just way and it will movement which refer to
lead to an independent Malaya. the Young against the Old.
The Young began to
challenge the Old regarding
the Islamic affairs.
However, the Young
movement overshadowed
by the emerging of the
Malay Associations in 1920s.
The Malay Associations
began to help to uplift Malay
living conditions.
Therefore, the Malay divided
into two wings;
1. The right wing - the Malay
Associations
2. The left wing - the young
Malay formed Kesatuan
Melayu Muda (KMM).
The Reformed Scholars Sitting From Right: Sheikh David Rashid,
Sheikh M.Djamil Djambek, Sheikh Sulaiman Arrasuli, Sheikh Ibrahim
Musa, and Sheikh Abdullah Ahmad.
