OTHER TOOLS FOR PERFORMANCE
IMPROVEMENT AND MEASUREMENT
INTRODUCTION
This chapter focuses on the other tools used in communicating performance to employees.
The tools are also used as measurement methods. There are four tools that will be
discussed in this chapter, they comprise of the spider charts, balanced scorecard, why-why
diagram and forced field analysis. This chapter provide an explanation on the usage of these
tools for measuring performance improvement, which could be used to present data in an
economical and easier way to understand.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of this chapter, student should be able to:
1. Understand on how to use other tools for performance improvement and measurement.
2. Implement the tools for performance improvement and measurement in real case study
4.1 SPIDER CHARTS
A radar chart graphically shows the size of the gaps for five to ten organizational
performance areas. The chart displays the important categories of performance and
makes them visible in terms of strengths and weaknesses. A radar chart could be
used to show a number of organizational performances in areas such as integrity,
accuracy, price, consistency, innovation, quality and speed. It is therefore very
essential that the initial evaluation should include varied perspectives to provide an
overall realistic and useful picture of the organization’s performance. Figure 4.1
shows an example of the spider charts.
