GAPING SEAM


                                                                                                 Iceland formed from rock that erupted from
                                                                                                 the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where it breaks the
                                                                                                 surface near Greenland. The rift between the
                                                                                                 North American and Eurasian plates passes
                                                                                                 right through the island, creating broad valleys.
                                                                                                 This is one of many ragged faults ripped in the
                                                                                                 floor of the Thingvellir rift valley where it is
                                                                                                 being slowly pulled apart.
