Settlers spread west
In the 19th century, the USA
was rapidly expanding. White Battle of
SETTLERS WENT WEST in
search of new territory, to Little Bighorn
the lands of the Native
Americans who had always
lived there. Many tribes were Custer’s final fight, and one of
forced off their own land and the last for NATIVE AMERICANS
into areas called reservations.
Trouble brewing
As time passed, the Natives were forced onto ever-
smaller reservations, and whites often INTRUDED even
on these meager lands. Angered by this, the Natives,
led by Hunkpapa chief Sitting Bull, decided to
fight back. In response, the US army sent a
cavalry division led by Civil War
veteran George Custer.
