The use of public space in old fabric is one of the interesting issues in recent years. Although most of the scholars
discussing the production of public space as a result of the economic, social, cultural components with dual interaction,
only few discuss the transformation of the public space through the time.
On the other hand, the use of the public space is one of the hottest subjects that can also be affected by the growth
and/or development of the city. Many planners believe on their reflections regarding the design and planning issues the
use of public spaces can be affected. Create new streets in the existing old fabrics can increment the use of public space.
Old Bazaar is an important social meeting space which had great role in Moorish cities for centuries. In Iran and in
most of Islamic countries, have been influenced by the modern urbanism in 20th century which as produced unconne-
cted fabric’s and neighborhoods. This research tries to investigate the impression of changes in form of public spaces,
cause by new streets, on the use of space, in Urmia, in period of time. The study presents a descriptive analytical study
based on a comparison between the existing urban layout and the new design proposal which presents new public spa-
ces (streets) in Urmia’s inner city. That morphological analysis will be supported by the theory of space syntax, which
shows, how building new spaces (streets) in old fabrics can be important for attract more pedestrian movants’ to the
surroundings of an important social meeting space, as is the Old Bazaar.
