Chapter 2 Force and Motion I
Figure 2.9 shows part of a ticker tape that is pulled by File
an object moving linearly.
5th tick 4th tick 3rd tick 2nd tick 1st tick When an object moves along
a straight line and does not
go backwards, its distance
Direction of and displacement are of the
Displacement over a 5 ticks period motion of same value.
Time = 5 ticks = 5 × 0.02 s = 0.10 s ticker tape
Figure 2.9 Part of a ticker tape pulled by an object
A ticker tape records the displacement of a moving object as well as the time taken.
Subsequently, the velocity and acceleration can be calculated. Figures 2.10 and 2.11 show the
calculations of velocity and acceleration of the linear motion of an object.

Displacement, s = 18 cm
Initial velocity, u = velocity at the first tick
Time taken, t = 6 ticks

0.12 s = 0.02 s
= 150 cm s –1 –1
= 180 cm s
Time between the final and initial velocity,
We already know how to calculate t = (7 – 1) ticks
velocity and acceleration of the linear = 6 ticks
motion of an object. = 6 × 0.02 s
= 0.12 s
v – u
Let us carry out an activity using a ticker Acceleration, a = t
timer and ticker tape to determine the (180 – 60) cm s –1
velocity and acceleration of a trolley. = 0.12 s
= 1 000 cm s –2
