These expressions of uncertainty are often combined with omou “think” in order
to express different shades of estimated uncertainty in subtler ways.
Byōin ni itta hō ga i’i ka mo sirenai to omou.
I think that it might be better if you go to the hospital.
PATTERN PRACTICE 3
Cue: Kusuri nomimasu ne. You’ll take medicine, right?
Response: Hai, nonda hō ga i’i desu Yes, it would be better, right?
ne.
Cue: Osake nomimasen ne. You won’t drink alcohol, right?
Response: Hai, nomanai hō ga i’i Right. It would be better not to, right?
desu ne.
Repeat the drill using the following:
1. Byōin ni ikimasu ne.
2. Dekakemasen ne.
3. Okāsan ni wa hanashimasen ne.
4. Senpai ni kikimasu ne.
5. Kippu, yoyaku-shimasu ne.
PATTERN PRACTICE 4
Cue: Byōki ja nai deshō? He is not sick, isn’t he?
Response: Iya, byōki ka mo shiremasen Well, he may be sick, you know.

Cue: Satō-san wa shitte iru Ms. Sato knows it, right?
deshō?
Response: Iya, shiranai ka mo Well. She may not (know), you know.
shiremasen yo.
Repeat the drill using the following:
1. Kaze deshō?
2. Sakana wa suki ja nai deshō?
3. Minna sō omou deshō?
4. Kono kusuri nonda hō ga i’i deshō?
5. Hikōki wa mada tsuite inai deshō?
