GRAMMAR NOTE X-shita hō ga i’i “It would be better if you do
                                       X”

Earlier we learned that /X no hō ga i’i / means that X is better, in comparing two
               alternatives.

Dochira no hō ga i’i desu ka. Which is better?

Kippu yori IC kādo no hō ga IC cards are better than tickets.
                    i’i desu.

You can also compare two actions, often doing or not doing something. And
when you choose doing something as the better alternative, you can put it in the
Informal Past form before hō ga i’i.

Byōin ni itta hō ga i’i. You’d better go to the hospital.
Kusuri o nonda hō ga i’i desu. You’d better take medicine.

If not doing something is the better choice, then you put the Informal Non-past

Negative form before hō ga i’i.
Unten-shinai hō ga i’i. You’d better not drive.
Sake nomanai hō ga i’i desu. You’d better not drink Sake.
