210 ATLAS OF THE WORLD’S STRANGEST ANIMALS
Opalescent Squid
In the spawning season, these colourful cephalopods put on a dramatic
display by rapidly changing the colour of their skin. Luckily, should this
striking spectacle attract unwanted attention from passing predators, they
have a few other strange tricks up their sleeves too.
Beak
Inside the mouth is a sharp
beak, mainly made of chitin,
which is the same material as in
a crustacean’s shell.
Eyes
A pair of large eyes give the
opalescent squid superb vision.
These eyes are covered by a
transparent membrane.
