Scenic Open-Air
Cinemas
The therinó sinemá (summer
movie theatre) is a much-
loved Greek institution, and
the venue is as much a part of
the experience as the film.
Some cinemas are lushly
landscaped with subtropical
vegetation, such as movies in
a park next to the sea on Kos,
whereas others take place
in historical venues, like
Bethlehem Cinema, in the old
Venetian walls at Iraklío
(p256). Larger islands have at
least one; the loveliest are on
Sámos, Crete and Páros.

Clubbing and Bars
For those who want to dance or drink like
Dionysos, the Greek Islands has resorts known
to party long into the night – and sometimes
into the day. Hit up the flashy jet-set crowd
on Santoríni (p110) or the more backpacker-
friendly vibes at Kávos on Corfu (p77). There are
even some bars – like Kavos Bach Bar on Skýros
(p116) – where you can walk straight onto the
relaxed bar terrace after taking a dip in the
surrounding aquamarine waters.
