At the Beach
Most Greek Islands have
sheltered, gentle sandy
beaches where toddlers up
can safely paddle in knee- or
waist-high water. Particular
favourites for families include
the tranquil Psilí Ámmos
West on Sámos (p138), the

GREEK ISLANDS FOR
FAMILIES
A culture where children are pretty much always welcome makes the Greek
Islands one of the most family-friendly destinations in the Mediterranean.
The islands offer sun, sand and sea – along with plenty of other attractions
to keep kids entertained, from ruined castles to retro aquariums.
Under the Sea
The retro 1930s aquarium
on Rhodes (p173), with its
subterranean galleries, is
old-fashioned fun. Beyond
the vintage look, there’s
plenty to appeal to kids of
all ages, including dolphins,
sharks, seals, sea turtles, fish
and crabs. The more state-of-
the-art Cretaquarium near
Goúrnes, on the island of
Crete, houses around 2,500
sea creatures and also has
educational programmes and
events for children (www.
cretaquarium.gr). A number
of beaches have facilities for
snorkelling – including Nanoú
on Sými (p197) – so kids can
also see underwater life in
its natural habitats.
