                  In the Middle Ages, the castle was the main
              residence of the dukes of Brittany. It was abandoned
                after the Revolution but, at the suggestion of the
              writer Prosper Mérimée, it was classified as a historic
                   monument in 1835. Now under municipal
               ownership, it contains a museum of Breton history.
