Côtes-d’Armor: Land of the Sea
From the Côte d’Émeraude, named after the colour of the sea off Saint-Malo, to the Côte de Granit
Rose, northern Brittany has one evocatively named coastline after another. At midway point, the
Côte des Ajoncs is characterized by the golden gorse flowers which thrive in the mild maritime
climate. All these shorelines merge into the Côtes-d’Armor, extending 350 km (210 miles) through
a dramatic mix of capes, coves, cliffs and tidal phenomena. Named after the ancient Breton word
armorique, land of the sea, this is a spirited region of countryside and sea, agriculture and
aquaculture and a cuisine infused by both.
