CONNECTING CONTINENTS
Underwater communications cables at the bottom of the
ocean transmit 99 percent of data—including internet
data—around the world. The cables are installed by
special boats and land equipment and can be sunk as
deep as Everest is tall—that’s 29,028 ft (8,848 m) deep!
When laying cables, care must be taken to avoid
obstructions such as reefs and sunken wrecks. COMMUNICATION
