In September 1940, an 18-year-old boy
WINDOW TO THE PAST climbed into an unexplored cave at
Lascaux, southern France, and discovered scenes of prehistoric wonder—a record of animal life
at least 17,000 years old. Decorated with more than 900 images, the cave walls depict herds of
galloping wild horses, deer, and prehistoric cattle known as aurochs.
