Some of the most spectacular insects that ever lived
AIRBORNE GIANT flew through the lush forests of the Carboniferous
Period, about 300 million years ago. They were griffinflies—extinct relatives of modern dragonflies,
but far bigger. Fossils of the largest known dragonfly relative, Meganeura, show that its wingspan
reached more than 27 in (69 cm), almost four times the size of the biggest living dragonflies.
