he members of the English Club have enjoyed an
exciting year. Working against seemingly
insurmountable obstacles to see the birth of the
first student newspaper stretched their abilities
and caused some to wonder if they had assumed a
task too great for them to complete.
The debut edition of PAW PRINTS was well
received by students and faculty in February. It
did not yet have a name. The editorial staff
decided to run a contest to elicit suggestions from
the student body. Travis Moore and Suzy Drury
came up with the identical name. Because the
cougar is our mascot, Pawprints is a very
appropriate and quite clever title.
The student-run newspaper is the first in the
history of the College. Although Dr. Jean
MacFarlane is the sponsor, the members of the
English club are responsible for contributing
articles, gaining approval of content, setting the
text, paste-up, and printing the paper. Using
computers has helped them tremendouly in the
production of the paper. It is their desire
eventually to issue the paper on a quarterly basis.
Tammy Williamson and Maria Jeffries read with interest one of the
humorous stories in the premier issue of the newspaper. It was
packed with informative articles as well as original poetry and prose.
