ou might not have known it, but
Y RHS started a new sports
program this fall season. It was the
girls cross country team which
consisted of six girls.
The team was led by seniors Sue
Zurek and Kelly Babb, with sophomore
Kris Naviaux and freshman Lynne
Retzlaff, Linda Weichel, and Wendy
Van Fosson.
The boys’ team included seniors
Marlin Ritzman, Jim Barry, Jeff
Wiechmann and YFU student Oscar
Flores. Juniors included Todd Wick,
Eric Torring and George Amen, with
sophomores Darrin Schnepel, Rich
Hellyer, Bill Nanson and Tim Rayer,
freshmen Todd Simchuk, Mike Barnes
and Jeff Bietz.
The girls team placed seventh at
Metro with 164 points and went to
state and placed eighth with 242
points.
Conditioning is the key to cross
country running. The conditioning
started out slow and worked up. The
team started out with one to two miles
a day, and worked up to four to five.
By the end of the season the team was
running five miles per day with little
problem.
“I feel the first year was a learning
experience for the girls. They had
never run that much distance before,
but they worked hard to improve
throughout the season,” said coach
Gary Dubbs.
“This year should be classified as a
successful, fun and a very good
learning experience,” added Coach
Dubbs.
