10.16. Uses of the passive
If the underlying verb indicates an action that can be done
to a person, the meaning of a passive expression is
‘someone has something done to him’ or ‘someone
undergoes the action.’ The person undergoing the action is
indicated by the particle wa or ga, and the person
responsible for the action (the agent) is indicated by the
particle ni.
Kodomo ga hahaoya ni
tatakaremashita.
A child was hit by his mother.
But if the underlying verb indicates some action that
can’t be done directly to a person, like ‘dies,’ ‘quits,’ and
