4.10.4 The Effects of Reinforcement Selection in Creating Hybrid Composite

Materials between E-glass with Basalt, Jute or Flax in Resisting High Strain
                   Rates

To identify the best combination of the reinforcements for basalt, jute and flax
fibres with E-glass synthetic fibre in resisting dynamic compression loading, a

comparison between the specific dynamic peak stress of G2/B3/G2, [G/J]3G and

G2/F3/G2 was conducted. Table 4.10 presents the summary of the test data and the
                                                                                                 -1
                   selected strain rates are in the range of 755 - 850, 1125 - 1363 and 2214 - 2350 s .

In the meantime, as illustrated in Figure 4.41, it can be observed that the
specific dynamic peak stress depends on the range of strain rates applied. In this regard,

the combination of flax and E-glass fibres recorded the highest specific compressive
                                                             -1
stress within the strain rate of 755 to 850 s , followed by G2/B3/G2 and [G/J]3G. The
[G/J]3G exhibits specific peak stress that is about 4 % higher compared to the G2/F3/G2
                                                            -1
for the strain rates within 1125 to 1363 s , while the hybrid composite of G2/B3/G2
recorded the highest specific dynamic peak stress for the strain rates within 2214 to

                          -1
2350 s , with the stress value of 216 MPa. Within this range, the G2/F3/G2 and [G/J]3G
exhibit about 11.0 and 16.5 % lower dynamic peak stress in comparison with G2/B3/G2.

In regard to the effect of varying strain rates within the range of 755 to
                          -1
2350 s , the presence of basalt fibre in G2/B3/G2 has positively and significantly
increased the specific dynamic peak stress, which is proportionate to the strain rate

applied. The similar trend was also observed on [G/J]3G and G2/F3/G2. Therefore, the
hybridisation of basalt with E-glass fibres contributes to the increment of the specific

dynamic peak stress from 128, 182 to 216 MPa, within the strain rates of 755 - 850,
                                                -1
                   1125 - 1363 and 2214 - 2350 s , respectively. The remarkable increase of the specific
dynamic peak stress was apparent when the strain rates increased from 755 to
                          -1
1363 s . To be specific, the [G/J]3G shows about 32 % higher of the specific dynamic
                                                                                -1
peak stress when strain rate applied was increased up to 1363 s , instead of only 6 %
                                                                                        -1
increase when the applied strain rate was changed from 1363 to 2350 s . This similar
trend was also observed previously on G2/B3/G2.
