142 CHAPTER 6 HUMAN RESOURCE BUSINESS PROCESS
21. Drag the EmployeeNo from the Gross Pay Union Query into the first Field
property. Click on the Sort property and click on Ascending.
22. Drag PPEnded and GrossPay from Gross Pay Union Query into the second
and third Field properties.
23. Drag TaxRate, FWT, and UpperLimit from Withholding Table into the fourth,
fifth, and sixth Field properties.
24. Drag AllowanceAmount from Allowance Table into the seventh Field property.
The following steps relate to the calculation of payroll taxes. These calculations
are relatively complex but they serve two important purposes. First, we have not yet
learned about complex calculations in a database and they will allow us to practice
them. Second, taxation is an important part of the study of accounting. The study of
accounting information systems (AIS) requires a solid understanding of the different
aspects of accounting. It is important to keep in mind that "accounting" is the first word
in AIS!!
25. Click on the Field property in the eighth column of the design grid and click
on the Build :~ icon in the menu bar. Type FICA: Int([GrossPay]*O.062*100)/100 in
the upper portion of the Expression Builder window. The Int function removes the
fractional part of the number and returns the resulting integer value. This is necessary
for our calculation here because we are multiplying GrossPay (a dollar amount) by a
percentage and we want the result to be in dollars and cents. Click OK and click out of
the FICA field.
