                              different in the present and past.

                           2.  Students will be able to use wish and if only to talk about somebody’s habitual
                              behavior that we want to criticize and change.

                       I wish/If only
                           ‐  Usage

                                 o  I wish/If only + the past

                                     = We use ‘I wish/If only followed by the past’ to talk about imaginary
                                     situations in the present.

                                     = It expresses wishes for things to be different in the present.
                                 o  I wish/if only + the past perfect

                                     = We use ‘I wish/if only followed by the past perfect’ to talk about past
                                     situations that we regret or would like to be different.

                                 o  I wish/if only + would/wouldn’t + infinitive

                                     = We use ‘I wish/if only followed by would/wouldn’t and infinitive’ to talk
                                     about somebody’s habitual behavior that we want to criticize and change.
