Solution: The equation system has no solution, then 3 = m = , thus m =3n and 4m =5n .

Additionally since |m| = |3n| < 7, thus − <n< . Since n is an integer, then n = −2, −1, 0, 1, 2,

then m = −6, −3, 0, 3, 6. Hence, when m = −6,n = −2 or m = −3,n = −1 or m =0,n =0
or m =3,n =1 or m =6,n =2, the original equation system has no solution.

2.9 Assume the equation 2x + x + a =0 has the solution set A , and the equation
2
2x + bx +2 = 0 has the solution set B , and A ∩ B = {1/2}, find A ∪ B.
Solution: Let A = {1/2,x 1 },B = {1/2,x 2 } .
Vieta’s formulas lead to x 1 +1/2= −1/2,x 2 /2= 1 ⇒ x 1 = −1,x 2 =2.
Hence, A ∪ B = {1/2, −1}∪{1/2, 2} = {−1, 1/2, 2}.
