The Awakening

                                                         Kellen Joudan

Xalbadora de Vallesteros, an ordinary citizen from the realm of Vriosiatria, gazed out
across the shadows of the fallen kingdom. The once spotless ivory-colored walls of the
palace were almost tangible, now taken back by nature. Paint crumbled off the walls and
were slowly replaced by vines that crawled their way towards the rooftops. Houses and
marketplaces were destroyed, leaving the base structures lying on the ground. It had

become a place where citizens had to take cover, else they would meet a violent end.

Vriosiatria wasn’t always like this, not until ten years ago. The ‘Crypt Brigade’, an
organization who identified themselves as gods who would bring peace to the world, took
over. They had incredible power, magic, consisting of the four most powerful elements:
earth, fire, water and wind. It was also rumoured that the mastermind had the power of
mind-control. Their capabilities were not to be underestimated. Despite knowing this,

Xalbadora, who had the least potential to win against them, knew that she must bring
back Vriosiatria to its original glory.

“It’s time.” Xalbadora stated to her accomplices.

The sky turned dark and a strong gust of wind blew against the young girls’ faces. The

dead of the night, a time when the palace was at its most vulnerable defense. A third of
the guards walked back to their sleeping chambers and the guards at shift were at their
lowest concentration. Making use of this opportunity, the girls lightly knocked their
wooden sticks to the ground and teleported to the inner base of the castle. It was time to
commence their first plan: rescue the imprisoned king.

“Let’s split up,” whispered Xalbadora. She let go of Maggie’s arms and carefully walked
across the corridors. Quietly, she sprinkled sleeping powder on the watchmen and

explored each room one after another, in hopes to find the hidden king.

“Xalbadora…..Xalbadora…,” a familiar voice tingled in the little girl’s ears. Xalbadora,
who thought that it was just her imagination, ignored it and continued walking across the
               corridors.
